A South Los Angeles native, Captain Jonathan Bowers began his career in public service in 1979 as an Emergency Medical Technician
at Martin Luther King Hospital moving from there to serving as a firefighter with The Compton Fire Department. Over the course of his decorated 40-year emergency medical service and firefighting career, Jonathan has held numerous administrative, leadership and instructor roles. Captain Bowers obtained teaching credentials and, as a state certified fire instructor, has served as Administrator and Primary Instructor for the Jim Shern Fire Academy of Compton College for seven years. There he developed the EMT course curriculum and lesson plans, and taught courses in fire science, fire control and safety, EMT/Paramedic training and more. His work with the Academy over the years provided much-needed job training for hundreds of men and women of color in the South Los Angeles community. Jonathan also holds a Bachelor of Science, Fire Science Administration-FESHE and NFA certified. As a dedicated Los Angeles County Fire Captain with over 35 years of progressively responsible experience in public service, serving in the capacity of EMT-1, Firefighter Paramedic Engineer and Captain within the Los Angeles County and City of Compton fire departments. Extensive hospital ER/trauma experience adds depth to his medical knowledge. Proven track record of leveraging well-developed leadership and analytical skills to strengthen firefighting and rescue operations, with an uncompromising work ethic and devotion to community service. During his tenure, he also served as liaison to the City Council, Mayor and Board of Supervisors. Additionally, Captain Bowers served as the Executive Vice president of the Los Angeles County Stentorians, a historic community service organization also known as the African American Firefighters Association for over 20 years.
